Bears Necessity: Cal - Arizona State Report Card

I think you're right on the money, Avinash. Given the game situation--the early lead, a red-hot defense, and an out-of-this-world punter--I'm not quite as critical of the 2nd-half play calling as you are. I just wish the Bears could execute in the run game more consistently, which is something I've come to take for granted in the Tedford era.

I'm not quite critical either, but if we really want to win the meat of our schedule, this conservative playcalling is going to kill us at some point. Not every Pac-10 team is just going to sit down and take their lumps. Someone with the right mindset can probably score a victory over the defense, and we'll have no idea how the offense will respond.

Good read. FYI, it wasn't a lapse by Syd that led to the TD. It was Cattouse at safety. They were in zone, and Syd stayed with the guy till he went deep, at which point Cattouse was supposed to pick him up. He reacted terribly late, and then took a bad angle. The main camera angle didn't pick it up, but on a couple replays you could see it.

Nice call. I'll try and edit that into the report card.

A good analysis of the game. I was disappointed when Longshore took the field. It seems Tedford is bound to have this guy on the field. He overthrew a wide open receiver that should have been a touchdown and on another play the receiver was wide open and had to make a diving catch just to get the completion. The only pass he can throw is the sawing pass. Anything over ten yards seems to wobble and drift. It is almost likethe receivers have to call for a fair catch when Nate letts loose. He has a terrible arm and no mobility. Bring back Riley ASAP!

Yeah, that throw is getting a little wobblier than I remember it. Late in games the throw has a tendency to drift.

I'll have to attest it to Longshore shaking off rust after not playing four quarter for ten months and hope it's not a sign of things to come.

    Avi

thanks for the compliment over on CGB.

Anyways, I wanted to disagree with your B for special teams but when you look at KOs, returns, et cetera, not everyone was Brian Anger. I remember one that the ASU guy tried to field at the 20 and stepped back to the 9 and got to the 10. He's just going to be fun to watch for the next 4 years. Even his shanks are long.

I do agree I should comment on Bryan Anger. I'll save him a special post later this week.

What? No comment about a 72-yard punt at an absolutely critical time in the game that pins ASU back near their own goal line?

    Whoooooops. Hold on.
