  • You need stars but more importantly, you need balance. As an analogy, think of a quarter mile race between a top-fuel dragster vs. a ‘66 VW Bug. Under normal circumstance the VW has no chance of winning. But what happens when the top-fueler’s engine is even slightly out of balance? Say one of the cylinders is getting a slightly richer or leaner mixture. The dragster’s engine certainly has more power (i.e. Stars), but because of the internal disturbance, once you open up the throttle the engine will tear itself apart, ending the second half of the race in a spectacular ball of fire (or finishing 1-6 before landing backwards into the Armed Forces consolation race). From this point, the VW has an easy time of it.
  • Good analogy. USC might not stockpile the star names this year, but even when they stumbled, they had enough talent left in the bank to regroup, find what they needed, and finish off their opponents.
